Alkalinity is one of the important factors that has huge impact on aquaculture.  Alkalinity in the pond water is the total amount of Sodium Bicarbonate plus Carbonate converted into Calcium Carbonate in pond water. Total Alkalinity levels in the pond can be measured as the presence of Bicarbonates, Carbonates, Hydroxides, Phospates etc., Alkalinity levels that are desired differs from animal to animal and with respect to the size of particular animal.  Alakalinity also has a huge impact on the growth of Phytoplankton in the pond water.  For example:  For Vannamei, the Alkalinity levels desired are between 100-120 PPM during seeding, 120-150 during the shrimp is at 30-45 days old and 150-200 for the shrimp older than 90 days.  For Black Shrimp, 80-100, 100-130 and 130-160 are desired respectively.

During less Alkalinity levels in pond water, certain nutrients are not available that are needed for aquatic plants like plankton which is most desired for aquatic animals.  Application of Agriculture Lime will clear the deficiency of Alkalinity in the pond water.  Alkalinity and pH has relative interrelation like when threre is high Alkanity, there is less variation in pH levels.
